When a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone that surrounded its root begins to shrink. Without stimulation from a tooth root, the bone resorbs — sometimes dramatically. Dental implants require a minimum bone volume to anchor securely, and bone grafting restores that volume.
Dr. Pasicznyk performs bone grafting in-house using biocompatible graft material — bone mineral, synthetic material, or your own bone — that your body gradually integrates and converts into living bone. Over several months, the graft matures and creates a solid foundation for implant placement.

The Process
How Bone Grafting Works
A cone beam CT scan maps your bone volume, density, and anatomy in 3D. Dr. Pasicznyk evaluates the scan and determines which type of graft will best restore your jawbone for implant placement.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Graft material is placed into the deficient area and secured. The site is covered and sutured. Most procedures take under an hour and are done entirely in our office.
Over 4–6 months, your body remodels the graft into living bone. You'll have follow-up imaging to confirm the graft has matured before proceeding to implant placement.
Once the grafted bone is confirmed solid, implants are placed into the newly built foundation. From this point, the implant process continues the same as for any standard case.
Many patients who were told they couldn't get implants actually can — once bone is restored. Grafting is the procedure that makes implant candidacy possible for the majority of cases involving bone loss.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia and is typically less uncomfortable than patients expect. Post-operative soreness is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers for a few days. Any swelling typically peaks around day 2–3 and subsides within a week.
Most grafts require 4–6 months to fully integrate before implant placement. Socket grafts placed at the time of extraction tend to heal faster than larger ridge augmentation grafts. Sinus lifts vary by approach — a lateral window sinus lift typically requires 6 months; a crestal approach may allow implant placement sooner.
We use a variety of biocompatible graft materials depending on your case — including processed bone mineral (allograft), synthetic hydroxyapatite, and in some cases your own bone (autograft). Dr. Pasicznyk will recommend the most appropriate material at your consultation based on your imaging and treatment plan.
Graft failures are uncommon when proper technique and patient selection are used. Smoking significantly increases the risk and we advise patients to stop before and during healing. Infection is rare but can occur — we monitor your healing closely and address any complications promptly. Most cases that don't integrate fully can be re-grafted.
Not necessarily. Advances in grafting techniques and materials, combined with 3D imaging, have made implants possible in cases that once seemed unfeasible. Even patients with significant jawbone atrophy often have options — including bone grafting, zygomatic implants, or a combination approach. A current 3D scan is the only way to know for certain.
